Photography, like other branch of art, is a highly subjective subject. The interpretation of a piece of art varies from each person, from an engineer to a garbage collector, or may differ on how you look at it. A doctor may see a sunset at a beach image as a nicely-lit sky and seas, but a lorry driver may see it as a feeling of charm and moody due to the colour of the sun rays.
Having said that, an image that has been produced by a photographer has its own meaning. But for the masses, it may be different, and then, for the critiques, it’s a different story. They may argue about the artistic or sentimental values of the image, but it will not come to a conclusion, because, it is a very subjective matter. But don't ignore everything from these arguments, because some technical faults in each image, is technically technical, hence not subjective. (I.e. out-of focus subject, underexpose/overexpose, blurs, etc.) So, they are valid as long as what is being said is relevant. I've seen people arguing about 1 image that stretches to 4 pages long in a forum, because the owner of the image cannot accept that his image taken with a very expensive 70-200 stabilized image/reduced vibration lens will get this kind of criticism, although the other forumer made some very solid technical pointers.
What I've learnt from my short experience in photography (3 months or so) is, whenever a photographer possesses a good/ expensive equipment, they may tend to feel that they have the upper advantage (more knowledge) from the person with a lesser equipment in terms of technical ability and eye for the moment. They think that, because they have such expensive equipment, they will always produce good images. They think that a photographer with a lesser equipment is not qualified to comment on their work. They think that it's better to learn from a photographer with 3 days of experience but with expensive gadgets than with a photographer with a kit lens but with 10 years of experience to show upon. They will always believe that, "a good lens will always produce good image". It is a matter of ' what the camera can do for you, instead of what you can do with the camera '. They will not accept criticism, because 'photography is subjective' they say, and the feel of perfection (and EGO) starting to show itself. This is what they believes and worship. ...
There's a saying that says, "You’ll never stop learning, until you're finished, or dead", and I believes that. I don't believe the top of the line lens/body will produce great images, it will only assist our brain in producing the desired image, and it will never ever able to produce our imagination, in my opinion…
